President’s End-of-Year Letter

Leslie Beyer, President, PESAPESA Members,

Recognizing the market will end 2018 with significant challenges for our sector, we have all come to the end of a momentous year. In solidarity with our members as we approach 2019, PESA grew significantly as a stronger force in the oilfield services and equipment sector, and the Board of Directors, Advisory Board and I would like to thank you for your continued engagement.

This marks the fourth consecutive year of growth for PESA, with record attendance at April’s Annual Meeting, robust interest and development in committee programs, and continued Member Company commitment to invest in the workforce of today and tomorrow. PESA would not be successful without the care and commitment expressed by its Members, and the Association’s growth is a direct result of Member’s passion and involvement. I am sincerely optimistic that the next few years will be transformational, both in the sector and within PESA.

PESA is guided by its mantra of Train, Elevate, Network, and that sharp focus is top of mind with a broad range of workforce training and networking opportunities that will continue in 2019. More than 100 event and program opportunities are held each year, and we will continue to work with our Members to develop programs that resonate within their organizations.

TRAIN
As the sector looks to recruit, retain and promote its skilled workforce, PESA remains committed to offering Members opportunities to learn and grow regardless of their career level. Whether it’s offering actionable management strategies for today’s top issues or providing leadership tools needed for success, PESA is committed to cultivating leaders and strengthening employee skillsets.

The highly regarded training seminar Oil & Gas 101 had record attendance this past October. PESA will be offering two sessions of this course in 2019 to meet the growing needs of Member Companies. Additionally, PESA achieved great success with the 2018 Executive Leadership Program, resulting in two additional sections added for 2019, including the first to be held in the Permian.

PESA added three key benchmarking standards this year. The sector’s first diversity study analyzing the current state of female talent, from technical and support roles to the C-suite, was launched in April. The Engagement Committee is currently compiling a toolkit for Member Companies containing actionable tactics to develop more robust Diversity & Inclusion programs within their organizations.

The Health & Safety Benchmarking Digital Platform was launched in August and uses anonymized company data to identify baseline health and safety performance standards within the industry and specific sections of the sector. Also in August, the Credit Interchange Division (CID) added the ability for members to submit international credit data for the use of Member Companies.

PESA also celebrated the 25th anniversary of our strong partnership with the U.S. State Department in which foreign service officers meet twice a year in Houston for specialized training on oil and gas technology and the industry’s impact on global commerce. These vital sessions bring operators, Member Companies and academia together to educate a key stakeholder group on the importance of the oil and gas industry to energy security and geopolitics.

And finally, PESA’s Committees hosted a variety of roundtables, seminars and webinars, with topics ranging from best practices in recruitment and training to silica regulations to leveraging efficiencies across the supply chain. ELEVATE
With critical regulatory and legislative issues impacting the business for Member Companies on both the state and federal level in 2018, PESA has continued to engage with policymakers on international trade, environmental regulations and election outcomes. In October, PESA filed a number of product exclusion requests on behalf of Member Companies to avoid additional tariffs of 25% for individual parts imported from China that make up Artificial Lift Systems.

As the Section 301 exclusion process continues in 2019, PESA will work with our Members to identify equipment and products with commonality, and support these exclusions on their behalf.

PESA was also active during the election cycle, forming a task force to provide support and educational materials for Members with operations in Colorado. Member Companies helped defeat a ballot measure that would have made an estimated 85% of non-federal land in Colorado inaccessible for oil and gas development, which would have endangered more than 230,000 jobs.

As the Administration’s trade efforts progress, PESA will continue to bring awareness to these issues and more. The Washington, DC Fly-In is scheduled for February 11-13, and a compelling schedule of meetings and events with Administration officials and Members of Congress is currently being finalized.

NETWORK
It is important to highlight the tenet that sustains all PESA’s activities. Networking is the lifeblood of the industry, and PESA offers access to industry thought leaders, key customers and sector leadership. In addition to education and training, PESA events offer a chance to build relationships with colleagues, make strong connections with others in the industry, and gain new perspectives from sector leaders.

PESA has also made great strides towards a targeted international growth model, with the establishment of the Middle East Regional Chapter and the upcoming chapter in the developing market in Argentina. The Middle East Chapter recently held a successful meeting in Abu Dhabi during the ADIPEC conference and has created several subcommittees to align the region’s services and equipment organizations with local regulatory requirements and the region-specific business landscape. PESA MENA committees include Supply Chain, HSE, Local Content and Local In-Country Value.

The Argentina Regional Chapter has just begun formation and will give local members an opportunity to network, share best practices and interact with experts on critical local topics.

Finally, preparations for the 2019 Annual Meeting are underway, and we look forward to seeing you April 24-26 in San Diego at the Fairmont Grand Del Mar.  An impressive lineup of speakers is already in progress, and many of you have already registered for what will be an outstanding event.
