PESA Advocates for STEM Education

PESA is committed to supporting STEM education and makes yearly contributions that support advanced academic learning at the elementary, secondary and undergraduate levels.

As the national labor force ages, a significant percentage of American oil and gas professionals are projected to retire in the next 10 years. And according to the Department of Commerce, the number of jobs in STEM industries, including oil and gas, is expected to grow 50% faster over the next decade. Greater access to STEM education will allow the next generation of oil and gas professionals to succeed.

To help meet this need, PESA’s Energy Educators Committee works with PESA staff to coordinate various educational initiatives and sponsors fundraising activities to raise money for contributions to the IPAA/PESA Energy Education Center, the National Society of Black Engineers and the Oilfield Energy Centers education outreach programs.

PESA supports the National Society of Black Engineers’ (NSBE) Summer Engineering Experience for Kids, a free, three-week engineering immersion program for third through fifth graders that helps expose under-represented communities to STEM.

The IPAA/PESA Middle School STEM Career Exploration Initiative kicked off in 2018 with 10 schools in six districts in the Permian Basin area.

Five IPAA/PESA Petroleum Academies, four in Houston and one in Fort Worth, provide high school students with an advanced, multidisciplinary learning experience in science, mathematics and emerging technology concepts.

Each summer, students from the IPAA/PESA Petroleum Academies and Rice University take their first steps toward a successful career in the energy industry.
