The Petroleum Equipment Suppliers Association (PESA) comprises equipment manufacturers, wellsite service companies and supply companies serving the drilling and production segments of the petroleum industry. Founded in 1933 as the American Petroleum Equipment Suppliers Association, its role then was to assist the federal government in preparing a fair practice code for the oilfield equipment industry. With that objective accomplished, the Association’s charter members realized the value of keeping it intact as a trade association. The present name was adopted in 1938. Today, PESA's nearly 200 member companies, large and small, are active in the Association.

PESA Means Service

Publications

PESA News - a monthly newsletter designed to keep member company executives aware of industry trends and events.

Service Point Directory - listing the names, addresses and principal officers of member companies as well as service point locations throughout the world.

Cooperation with Allied Associations

PESA has strengthened its role as advocate for the oilfield service industry by joining forces with allied industry associations on several important activities. Allied associations include the American Petroleum Institute (API); International Association of Drilling Contractors (IADC); International Association of Geophysical Contractors (IAGC); Independent Petroleum Association of America (IPAA); Mid-Continent Oil & Gas Association; National Ocean Industries Association (NOIA); Natural Gas Suppliers Association (NGSA); and Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE).

Government Relations

Working through its Public Affairs Committee and International Operations Committee, and in conjunction with allied associations, PESA represents members on a host of issues including tax, trade, and energy and environmental policy. We are a part of a coalition of oilfield trade associations which tell the industry’s story in Washington. We also work with US government agencies such as the Departments of Commerce and Energy, the US Trade Representative and Environmental Protection Agency, and international government and customer representatives on trade issues important to our industry, such as the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), the European Community's Procurement Directives, and business opportunities in the former Soviet Union. PESA's Executive Committee served as industry consultants to the US negotiating teams on the Government Procurement and Market Access chapters of NAFTA, and our member companies were extremely active in urging ratification of the Agreement by the US Congress. PESA is also a member of USA*Engage, a coalition of American businesses and associations working together to inform and educate our legislators on the very real costs imposed by US unilateral trade sanctions.

Meetings and Seminars Provide Direct Contact with Industry Leaders

The information and insights gained by direct personal contact with industry leaders and experienced customer and member executives throughout the country can be critical to the survival in an industry as fast-moving as the oilfield service sector. PESA provides opportunities for such contacts in a variety of Association sponsored programs scheduled throughout the year.

The PESA Annual Meeting is attended by approximately 300 key member company executives, who hear presentations by industry leaders from customer companies, US and international government agencies, the financial community, and experts from other industries who speak to member company interests and concerns.

PESA's Explorers of Houston Committee is an awards program that seeks to recognize E&P companies for innovation and leadership. The committee selects one deserving E&P company each year and invites the entire executive team to be honored at a ceremony attended by PESA members only. The first Explorers Award for Innovation and Leadership went to Archie Dunham and the executive team of Conoco Inc.

PESA’s district and committee chairmen sponsor area meetings which provide industry outlook presentations as well as educational programs. The committees pool the expertise of our members for projects dealing with government relations, environmental regulations, and current industry and business issues. Because these committees are chaired by senior executives, the programs draw key industry leaders as speakers.

PESA's committees provide information to help our members' business operations. In recent years, the Public Affairs Committee has hosted a training session for foreign service officers serving in US embassies located in oil and gas-producing countries.

The Credit Interchange Division has sponsored conferences on lien laws and detailed "how-to" seminars on international trade finance, countertrade and political and country risk assessment.

PESA's International Operations Committee has sponsored recent presentations by Nikolay Matyash (Russian Petroleum Advisory Forum), Dr. Peter Bishop (University of Houston - Studies of the Future), US Ambassador to Azerbaijan Stanley T. Escudero, and Dr. Fransisco Pradas (PDVSA). The International Operations Committee also helps coordinate energy training sessions for US foreign service and foreign commercial officers hosted by PESA.

The Human Resources Committee sponsors an annual forum for industry leaders and human resource specialists on critical HR issues in today's business.

Credit Interchange Division

This unique member service provides the interchange of credit and collection experience among subscribing PESA members. By providing the means for member companies to exchange up-to-date ledger experience, CID has become an indispensable tool to our members for effective credit management.

For the year ending in December 2003, CID received over 35,000 requests for payment experience from member companies via the Internet, dial-in computer access and by phone. These requests were processed online using the approximately 12,000 reports in our database, which represent over 80,000 ledger entries.

Access to CID services is available to PESA Industry members.

PESA’s Structure

Each segment of the oilfield equipment, service and supply industry is represented in PESA’s membership, and each segment has its own general committee. Representatives of the various industry segments also serve on the Association’s Board of Directors.
PESA membership is divided into two geographic districts in the United States: Gulf Coast and Mid-Continent/Rockies.
.
Through PESA’s standing committees, the Association provides information to help member companies’ business operations by bringing together the talents of industry specialists and non-industry experts to address issues of interest and concern. The work of these groups provides member services in the forms of seminars on timely topics, surveys, industry position papers, testimony for use before governmental bodies, and Association activities.
